1. Helping Kids Prepare for SchoolKicking Off A Drive to Collect Back-to-School Supplies for the Fall

Many of our CarePartners have school-age children or grandchildren living with them, but have limited income to purchase back-to-school supplies. TIHAN is encouraging our congregations and individuals to help us stock up on new backbacks, notebooks, paper, pens and pencils, calculators, staplers, markers, folders, and other supplies. At the end of summer, we will distribute these to our families with kids. Drop off your supplies at the TIHAN office.

2. June, African Americans, and HIV

June is an important month. This is the 27th anniversary of the CDC mentioning the disease that eventually became known as AIDS. This June, The Balm in Gilead has a campaign (The Black Church Lights the Way) to get 10,000 African Americans to get an HIV test during this month. Additionally, June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. June 8 is Caribbean Americans HIV Awareness Day. June 19 is Juneteenth, a milestone in American history, when the last of the enslaved Americans were released from slavery, commemorated by a local festival and other events (call 883-5511 for more information). In recognition of all of these important events and activities, TIHAN's Poz Cafe lunch program for people living with HIV/AIDS for the month of June is being sponsored by the Tucson Urban League Guild and two black churches: Prince Chapel AME Church and Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church.

3. Pastiche Supports TIHAN with 5% of Your Purchase in June—Philanthropy With Phlavor!

Throughout the month of June, Pastiche Modern Eatery (www.pasticheme.com) will donate five percent of every purchase to one of forty charities of choice, including TIHAN. Any time you dine at the restaurant during the month of June—and again in October—please designate TIHAN as the charity to receive Pastiche's donation of 5% of your purchase. In addition to lunch and dinner (including late night dining!), Pastiche now features the $20 Summer Dinner Special, Sunday brunch, Friday night wine tastings, and the Extreme Wine Ganga! Pastiche Modern Eatery, at 3025 N. Campbell, opened over 10 years ago, and has donated over $80,000 to various charities. TIHAN is proud to support Pastiche and other local independent restaurants (for a list of locally-owned restaurants, check out the Tucson Originals website www.tucsonoriginals.com).

4. Teach for a Good Cause

Thirty-seven percent of Americans "still incorrectly think HIV might be transmitted through various forms of casual contact, such as kissing…" (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2006) Be the first person to share the facts of HIV with people who are interested in HIV/AIDS service!

Give presentations to volunteers and faith community members to increase compassion and decrease stigma for HIV/AIDS. All you have to do is attend TIHAN Volunteer Orientation and Speakers' Training, stay up-to-date on HIV/AIDS information, and be friendly, outgoing, and reliable.

Our next Speakers' Training is Saturday, July 12 from 9am-5pm at TIHAN, 1011 N. Craycroft Road, #301. You will learn to share the facts about the disease and share your own story of being affected by HIV/AIDS.

The training is $17 and scholarships are available. Please RSVP by calling 299-6647. You can contact Ari Kelly, ari@tihan.org or 299-6647, with questions.

6. Volunteer Spotlight: Amrit Uprety

"You get out of volunteering what you put into it," states Amrit Uprety, a Nepalese native who came to Tucson via Texas. Nepal is an independent nation located in central Asia. Landlocked and isolated by the Himalayas, Nepal is bordered on the west, south, and east by India, and on the North by the Tibet region of China. Katmandu is the capital.

Amrit, who has been a volunteer at TIHAN since 2005, concentrates on speaker training and volunteer orientations. Through friends who are HIV+ and brochures from SAAF, Amrit was led to meet another side of Tucson at TIHAN, one where he could give back to the community via his time, energy, and talent.

Working as a tech support representative for Intuit as a US based agent for accountants, Amrit relaxes by exercising every other day, and seeking times of solitude, where he can be alone to relax. This recharging enables him to re-energize and prepare himself to return to helping others. Another outlet for Amrit is buying something special for himself, not necessarily something that he wants, but more in keeping with something that he needs. For example, on a recent trip to Phoenix, he bought a watch.

Traveling and visiting parks is something that Amrit likes to do. One of his favorite parks is Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, which includes a natural spring-fed pool with an average water temperature of 70 degrees.

An eclectic reader, Amrit's taste runs the gamut from poetry, to Carl Sagan, to exploring other religions of the world. As a Hindu, Amrit is accepting of peoples' faiths and hopes that others feel the same.

Animated movies, such as Ratatouille, and adventure movies, including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones series are some of Amrit's favorites. Amrit also likes to cook. One of his favorite dishes to make is Aloo Gobi, an Indian dish made with cauliflower, potatoes, tomatoes, cilantro, ginger, garlic, onion and various spices. It is definitely a dish worth trying!

Amrit is a prime example of what makes an exceptional TIHAN volunteer: a well-rounded individual who gives back to the community. Amrit, TIHAN is honored to have you as a friend and volunteer.

7. Memorial Service Scheduled for Bill McManus—June 28

Bill McManus will always occupy a special place in the hearts of those of us who loved him—TIHAN's Board of Directors, of which Bill was a member, along with the TIHAN staff, Bill's CareTeam and many friends at TIHAN and Poz Cafe, SAAF, El Rio SIA, the Consortium, his motorcycle group, and many others. He will also be remembered by the hundreds of people that Bill has touched through his speaking as a person living with HIV, especially the youth that Bill talked to about HIV prevention.

Bill was a role model to many people, and had received TIHAN's Empowerment Award in 2004 for his courage and inspiration. He was an AIDS educator, caregiver, peer counselor, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Please keep Bill and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers…

A memorial service for Bill is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 at 10am at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church (4625 East River Road, at the corner of Swan and River).

8. Test Your Knowledge of HIVTrue of False? Is the United States One of the 12 Countries in the World to Ban HIV-Positive Visitors?

Yes, it's true. The 12 countries that have bans on allowing HIV-positive people into their country as visitors or immigrants are: Armenia, Brunei, Iraq, Libya, Moldova, Oman, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sudan and… the United States!

From Poz Magazine (www.poz.com):

Andrew Sullivan Blasts HIV Travel Restrictions

In a Washington Post (washingtonpost.com, 5/14) opinion piece, HIV-positive political commentator Andrew Sullivan urges the removal of the United States travel ban on HIV-positive immigrants entering the country.

According to Sullivan, HIV remains the only medical condition designated by law in the Immigration and Nationality Act that is used as justification for restricting someone from entering the U.S. He calls the ban—which violates United Nations standards for member states—discriminatory to HIV-positive immigrants.

"Making HIV the only medical condition that legally prevents someone from immigrating or even visiting is a signal to people with HIV that they have something to be ashamed of," writes Sullivan. "That stigma is one of the greatest obstacles to tackling HIV across the world. The United States has done much to reduce this stigma; it makes no sense to perpetuate it in its own immigration policy."

9. Pos or Not?

"…no stereotyping…a pretty good wakeup call…" —Craig

"…I got caught up studying the faces and reading their bios… AIDS does not discriminate." —Beth

"…if I would have passed them on the street, there is no way that 'HIV/AIDS' would have popped into my head." —Christa

Those are a few comments from TIHAN volunteers on the new online game "Pos or Not."

mtvU and the Kaiser Family Foundation, with partner POZ Magazine, have a new online game aimed at destroying myths and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. Partly designed by college students, the game consists of viewing a photo and a few facts about a real person, then guessing whether that person is HIV-positive or not. The online game is an innovative way to share the message that testing is the only way to truly know your HIV status.

In a press release, Regan Hofmann, editor-in-chief of POZ magazine, said, "Having a face-to-face encounter with a person living with the virus can also positively affect the choices people make regarding behaviors that can lead to their contracting HIV. I think that 'Pos or Not' is a wonderful way to allow the HIV community to serve as an awareness and prevention tool for those who are—but who do not believe themselves to be—at risk."

The website includes information on testing resources and the CDC, and instructions for adding yourself to the game. Try it at posornot.com.

11. Make Leslie Dance!

Want to see TIHAN Administrative Assistant Leslie dance with joy? Donate a ream (or a case) of white, multipurpose, letter-size paper to the TIHAN office. Or some binder clips in small to medium sizes. Or bottles of liquid hand soap. Watch Leslie dance for joy when you bring in self-adhesive name badges, or when she receives plastic liners for 10-13 gallon waste baskets. She might even pirouette when she receives a box of #10 business-size security envelopes! These are the types of donations that help keep our office running smoothly. It's true, none of them are what you might consider "sexy," but then neither is Leslie's dancing!

12. Become a TIHAN Team Member

TIHAN is seeking a diverse group of volunteers that represent a cross section of our community to join existing volunteers in meeting the program and service needs of our CarePartners, people living with HIV/AIDS. TIHAN's goal is to have our volunteers reflect the ethnic diversity of the people we serve, our CarePartners. With your help, we will continue to grow—not in order to become bigger, but as a result of getting better.

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities that will allow you to give as much, or as little, as time will allow (quarterly, monthly, or weekly). We are seeking both professional and non-professional volunteers who have a sincere interest in making life better for a sometimes forgotten group of special people, our CarePartners. Please join us, and make a difference!

We have a daytime Volunteer Orientation scheduled for Tuesday, July 8 from 1:00-5:00pm and an evening Orientation on Thursday, September 11 from 5:15-9:15pm. Please call the TIHAN office to sign up—299-6647. For information about volunteer opportunities, email our Volunteer Coordinator, Kim Talerico, kim@tihan.org. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mark with Bonkers

15. Bonkers About Mark Moellenhoff

Mark Moellenhoff is an active member of a TIHAN CareTeam providing care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS. Mark also previously served as our "website guru," helping to design our website and handling our website maintenance.

In addition to his volunteer work at TIHAN, Mark currently serves as President of the Raytheon GLBTA-Tucson Employee Resource Group. Not only does Mark bring his professional skills to TIHAN, but he provides a loving and caring experience to our CarePartners in need of extra assistance. As a volunteer on a CareTeam, Mark has lost three CarePartners since he started volunteering. Although these losses have been difficult, Mark takes time to grieve, then returns to TIHAN to help support another special person.

Mark, TIHAN and those we serve are very grateful for your presence and contributions—we are BONKERS about you!

16. TIHAN Night at The Sidewinders

As most of you know, this is the last year for "TIHAN Night at the Sidewinders," as the Sidewinders are moving to Reno, Nevada. We hope to make this last event the best yet!

The date is set for Saturday, July 13, 2008. There is a double-header and we have access to both games for one price. The tickets sell for $30 presale and $35 at the door; $16.52 of each ticket goes to the Sidewinders.

You can call Greg Rogan (742-0646) for tickets, or TIHAN (299-6647) for information. We are in the process of soliciting sponsors for the event and collecting items for a silent auction. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. The menu will be the All-American Buffet which includes hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, chips, soft drinks and bottled water. A cash bar is also available.

We look forward to making this 9th and final year one that benefits TIHAN and one that we all remember fondly.
