Monthly E-Newsletter for

June 2010

Dear Friends,

Thanks to literally hundreds of donors and volunteers, we had a wonderful "Treasures for TIHAN" benefit auction on May 22.

It was a fun and successful event (but—in a sign of the times—not quite as successful as last year). If you missed the fun but would still like to contribute to the programs of TIHAN and those we serve, please consider making a donation in support of one of our programs and our CarePartners living with HIV/AAIDS.

Click here for more details about a donation to support people living with HIV…

Here are more news and announcements that we think will be of interest to you!

1. Share Yourself and Make a Difference

Do you enjoy helping your friends get connected with resources they need? Do you naturally lend an ear to those that have gone through hard times? If so, you could be a perfect fit as a Link Specialist volunteer for TIHAN! We are actively recruiting people willing and able to be that first human connection for CarePartners to TIHAN's services. Tasks could include making periodic check-in phone calls to CarePartners living with HIV, fielding calls from CarePartners and referring them to the appropriate resources, informing people about TIHAN events, registering new CarePartners, and processing registration updates. Whatever time you can give on a regular weekly basis is greatly needed and appreciated.

If you are interested in providing direct services to CarePartners, please contact Taina Compagnet, Director of CarePartner Support, at (520) 299-6647 or taina@tihan.org.

3. TIHAN Night at the Tucson Toros Baseball Game – Tickets Only $5

It's TIHAN night at the Tucson Toros game on Wednesday, July 7!

And, what does that mean, you ask? TIHAN will receive half of the proceeds from our ticket sales for the July 7th game (tickets must be purchased through TIHAN). The game is the Tucson Toros versus the Chico Outlaws.

So gather a group of family and friends to spend a July evening enjoying the great American summer pastime, which will also benefit one of your favorite charities! Just in case you need other ideas for sharing game tickets, here are a few suggestions:

  • What about celebrating all your family/friends' July birthdays at the game?

  • How about taking your favorite young people to the game?

  • What about using the tickets for a work place raffle relevant to your work?

  • How about sponsoring individuals living with HIV/AIDS?

  • How about taking the little league team that you coach to the game?

  • Taking your exercise group for a walk/run/stroll around Reid Park followed by the game.

See, there are several ways you might be able to incorporate this event into your work, social, fitness, and family time.

Here are few more particulars about the event:

Game Date/Time: Wednesday, July 7, 7:00pm
Location: Hi Corbett Stadium - Reid Park
Hi Corbett Field can be accessed from East Camino Campestre or South Randolph Way.
—Access from the west on East Camino Campestre can be easily found off of South Country Club Road.
—To enter off of South Randolph Way, use East Broadway from the north or East 22nd Street from the south.

Tickets: Purchase your tickets in advance from TIHAN for $5.00. We'll receive ½ of the ticket price for each ticket we sell in advance through the TIHAN office.

To purchase tickets, call 299-6647, or stop in the TIHAN office during regular business hours.

7. Checking What You Know about HIV/AIDS: Test Question of the Month

Question: Are There Components of the Recently Passed Health Care Reform that have the Potential to Help Persons with HIV?

Answer: Yes. According to the Black AIDS Institute, there are many four things in the recently passed legislation that are critically important for people living with HIV/AIDS or any other chronic disease, including these four important considerations:

  • Requires that all Americans obtain health insurance. This "individual mandate" is an approach which has already been implemented in Massachusetts since 2006. By requiring that all Americans buy or otherwise obtain coverage, the risk pool is expanded and insurance premiums may go down. As a part of this requirement, the federal government obligates itself to provide subsidies to those who are unable to afford coverage.

  • Ensures health insurance coverage for 32 million of the more than 40 million Americans who currently lack health insurance. This is achieved mainly through slight expansions in Medicaid and Medicare, the closing of the drug assistance donut hole, and providing subsidies to persons and families who cannot afford health insurance.

  • Bans insurance companies from making coverage decisions based on "pre-existing conditions." It will no longer be legal for insurers to refuse or terminate coverage for persons living with significant health concerns (like HIV/AIDS) because of those health concerns. In the legislation, these are identified as guarantees of availability and renewability of coverage.

  • Prohibits life-time caps on how much health care an insurance plan will cover in an insured person's lifetime. This is especially important for people with long-term chronic conditions.

These changes have considerable positive implications for people living with HIV/AIDS. Historically, people with AIDS have experienced major barriers in obtaining health insurance and keeping it, especially when purchasing insurance as an individual. Given the potentially enormous cost of life-saving HIV treatments over a lifetime, "guaranteed availability and renewability of coverage" is a key victory for people with AIDS.

8. Thanks for Making A Difference – A Note from Taina

I have been the Director of CarePartner Support at TIHAN now for the past four months and I can honestly say I feel right at home. Getting acquainted with how everything works around here has been an exciting challenge for me. Everyone has been exceptionally welcoming and helpful. I feel especially grateful to work with so many caring volunteers that live their passions and faith every time they lend a hand to support our CarePartners. The success of the CarePartner programs is sustained by their enthusiasm and dedication.

I just want to say thank you to everyone that contributes by working on a CareTeam, as a Link Specialist and at the Poz Cafe. Through your actions, you exemplify what it means to love without judgments, and I am so honored to be a part of TIHAN because of you.
