2. Volunteering is Part of the American Way of
Life
Volunteering gives you an opportunity
to change people's lives, including your own. If you're
feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by what's going on around
you, volunteering to help someone in need can be a great way
to cope. If you would like to support a cause, but cannot
afford to donate money, you can donate your time instead.
Helping others in need is such an important part of the
American way of life.
When you attend a TIHAN Volunteer
Orientation, you find what's right for you and how it fits
your schedule; how volunteering can expand your mind and
improve your skills—all while making you feel good about
yourself and what you are doing, not to mention, making you a
role model for others.
So Where Do I Sign Up? All you
have to do is call the TIHAN office, 299-6647, and sign up for
a Volunteer Orientation. We have orientations scheduled for
Thursday, September 11 and Thursday, November 13. To discuss
the Orientations, or Volunteer opportunities, email Kim
Talerico, Volunteer Coordinator, kim@tihan.org.

Helping Kids Prepare for School—Kicking Off A Drive to
Collect Back-to-School Supplies for the Fall
Many of our CarePartners have
school-age children or grandchildren living with them, but
have limited income to purchase back-to-school supplies. TIHAN
is encouraging our congregations and individuals to help us
stock up on new backpacks, notebooks, paper, pens and pencils,
calculators, staplers, markers, folders, and other supplies.
At the end of summer, we will distribute these to our families
with kids. Please drop off your supplies by July 31 at the
TIHAN office.

4. Thanks for the outpouring of
support and donations in memory of friends recently lost…
In the last few months, we have lost several beloved people
very involved in TIHAN, including former Administrative
Assistant Jim Valiton (pictured above, on the left), board
member Bill McManus (center), and volunteer extraordinaire Dr.
Myron Morris (right). We are grateful for your gifts in memory
of these key TIHAN supporters, gifts that will allow TIHAN to
continue the important work to which each of these people
devoted their hearts and souls. Thank you for continuing their
legacy through your contributions to TIHAN.

5. Exercise Your Freedom to Give Hope!
"Want of care does us more damage than want of
knowledge." —Benjamin Franklin
Our neighbors living with HIV are waiting for TIHAN
CareTeams! Attend TIHAN's Support Training to become a
CareTeam volunteer, Link Specialist, Poz Cafe volunteer, or
Holiday Program volunteer. If you cannot attend, you can
contribute to the training by greeting volunteers, providing
refreshments, and providing scholarship funds. Contact Ari
Kelly, ari@tihan.org or
299-6647.
Support Training will be held Saturday, September 27,
9:00am to 5:00pm at TIHAN. Training is now FREE and
includes lunch, snacks, and your very own manual. Training
will also be held on Saturday, November 22. Call 299-6647 to
sign up. Questions? Contact Ari Kelly, ari@tihan.org
or 299-6647.

6. Learn About Substance Abuse
Substance abuse is the overindulgence in and dependence on a
drug or other chemical leading to effects that are detrimental
to the individual's physical and mental health, or the welfare
of others. Is substance abuse affecting you or those around you?
Join us for our next FREE Continuing Education workshop
for volunteers and CarePartners on Thursday, August 7, at SAAF,
375 S. Euclid Ave.
Monthly workshops are held jointly with SAAF, and the topic
for August's presentation is Substance Abuse. We ask volunteers
to attend at least three workshops each year. Call the front
desk, 299-6647, or email Ari Kelly, ari@tihan.org,
to sign up! Registration is appreciated but not required.

7. Leslie Did Dance!
Several of you got to see our Administrative Assistant,
Leslie Johnson, perform little "dances of
gratefulness" last month when you brought your in-kind
gifts into the TIHAN office. She danced because (in addition
to promising in June's e-newsletter that she would) your
in-kind gifts help keep our expenses low, and your gifts meet
our needs for office equipment and supplies. This month, we
are wishing for…
- Desk-Top Printer One good quality, newer model,
color printer for printing Education brochures.
- Paper Cutter Sharpening and repair of our paper
cutter (Boston #2612)—or even a brand-new paper cutter.
- Surge Protectors Ten surge protectors with 6-ft
cords and longer to protect our computers from electrical
variations during the monsoon.
- 3-Ring View Binders 1" size, for our
volunteer training manuals.
- Paper
- Multi-purpose, letter-size, colored paper to
photocopy forms and sections of our training
manuals-both pastels and brights.
- Card stock, 110#, white, for creating postcards and
certificates.
- Mailing Supplies
- Avery 5160 labels for laser printers, for mailing
announcements and invitations to CarePartners and
volunteers, and for mailing newsletters.
- #10 Security Envelopes.
- Coffee Supplies for serving coffee to our guests
and volunteers
- Ground coffee, regular.
- Coffee filters for 12-cup automatic drip coffee
makers (Black & Decker and Mr. Coffee).
- Packets of artificial sweetener.
- Miscellaneous Supplies
- Pencil-type envelope moisteners with sponge tips,
for sealing envelopes.
- Self-adhesive name badges.
- Glue sticks.
- Small paper cups for water cooler (4 to 6 ounce
size).
If you have any questions about in-kind giving to TIHAN,
please contact Leslie at leslie@tihan.org
or 299-6647.

"Stonewall R iot"
— A Benefit Show—Sunday,
August 24
Turnabout is an annual show put on by some of Tucson's LGBT
clubs and their staff. The staff request donations from their
friends and customers in order to do a "turn-about"
from male to female (or vice versa) and put on a show for the
community, with all proceeds supporting TIHAN's programs and
services. Last year's event raised over $17,000 for TIHAN!
This year's 12th annual show takes place on Sunday, August 24
at the Doubletree Hotel at 445 South Alvernon Way. The doors
open at 4:30pm, and the show starts at 6:00pm. Tickets are only
$15.
For more information on how you can participate in the fun by
volunteering with the event, or attending, please call 299-6647.
Tickets are on sale now through the TIHAN office (credit card
orders can be taken), or at participating bars: Colors, Howl at
the Moon, IBT's, Woody's, and Yard Dog Saloon.
[Be Advised: This show may feature
adult themes, and is for mature audiences only!]
