1. Clean Your Closets for TIHAN! You're
Invited to Have A Yard Sale to Benefit TIHAN and Our Programs!
One person's trash is another person's treasure. Yard sales
(garage sales, tag sales, rummage sales) are a great way to make
money by selling items that are already in your house. So clean
out your closets, set up a yard sale, and it's a win-win
solution for you and for TIHAN's programs!
Thanks to our friends at The New Tucson Shopper, which is our
corporate sponsor for this "Clean Your Closets for
TIHAN" concept, when you register with us to have a yard
sale benefit, you receive a free Yard Sale Planning Guide
filled with tips and information, preprinted street signs, and
free advertising of your yard sale in The New Tucson Shopper (www.newtucsonshopper.com)
We'll provide you with TIHAN flyers, newsletters, and donation
envelopes if you'd like. What we ask is that at least 50% of the
proceeds (or even better—100% of the proceeds!) be donated to
TIHAN.
You can also ask friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to
donate stuff (old furniture, appliances, kitchenware, clothes,
coats, toys, books, etc.). It's likely that they will be happy
to rid themselves of a few items that are just causing clutter.
You can also coordinate a multi-family yard sale, or a community
yard sale at your congregation or business.
To request your "Clean Out Your Closets for TIHAN"
packet, Yard Sale Planning Guide, and free advertising in The
New Tucson Shopper, contact Scott at 299-6647 or scott@tihan.org
More tips for having a successful charity yard sale:
Don't be afraid to price items generously—people tend to
try to bargain prices down. Hopefully, since they know the
proceeds are going to charity, they will not try to bargain too
much, but even inexpensive items will help profit your charity.
Put a donation jar out for people who would like to help your
cause but are not going to purchase anything. Make it a festive
atmosphere with balloons and music (CDs or radio).
Hold a raffle for a special item. You can display the actual
item or a picture of the item you are raffling. Sell tickets
throughout the sale (or sales) and have the raffle drawing at
the end of the sale, or sell raffle tickets to a raffle that is
ending at a later date.
Have a table with "grab bags" of items where people
can get one bag for $2 or $5. These bags could contain some
items like utensils, Tupperware, pots, bath products, etc. In
each bag have a flyer that also gives someone the option to send
in a small donation later.
On a clipboard at your checkout counter, offer a newsletter
sign-up form. Include a notation that they could donate their
used goods or volunteer to have their own sale. Have a
"check" box for this. Remember ask, ask, ask!
It is also a good idea to pre-print "thank you"
notes to give to customers after they make their purchase,
thanking them for helping your cause and directing them to where
they could find more information (web site, phone numbers,
etc.).

2. Masonic Lodge Presents Proceeds
of Yard Sale To TIHAN
In June, the Brother to Brother
Committee of the Mason's Aaron Lodge #49 presented TIHAN with
a $250 check from the proceeds of a yard sale they held. TIHAN
is very grateful to have the moral and financial support of
this group, and we pleased to accept the check and an eloquent
letter of presentation. Thank you Aaron Lodge #49!
Letter from the Brother to Brother
Committee
Aaron Lodge #49:
On behalf of the Brother to Brother
Committee of Aaron Lodge #49 we take a great pride in
presenting you with this check for $250. The work of TIHAN
within the community is profound and greatly appreciated. The
support that TIHAN provides to the HIV/AIDS community of
Tucson is one that builds bridges and brings people from all
walks of life together in the battle against the devastating
hardships of HIV/AIDS. We here at Aaron Lodge salute the work
that TIHAN accomplishes and pledge future support to your
organization.
The Brothers of Aaron Lodge pride
themselves in the charitable works we are able to accomplish.
The check presented today is from the proceeds of a Masonic
Yard Sale sponsored by the Brother to Brother Committee of
Aaron Lodge. We at Aaron Lodge are committed to serving our
community just as we know that you are. All of our Brothers
believe that by rolling up our sleeves and working up a sweat
on our brows that we can all help those in need and help to
make our community a better place for all.
Again, thank you for all the
wonderful work that TIHAN puts forth to this community. The
work you do is an exemplary example of our beliefs within
Freemasonry and especially Aaron Lodge: faith, hope, and
charity.
Stan Brown - Past Master of Aaron
Lodge #49 (Chairman Brother to Brother Committee)
John Johnson - Senior Warden Aaron Lodge #49 (Brother to
Brother Committee Member)
Gil Mowbray - Chaplain Aaron Lodge #49 (Brother to Brother
Committee Member)
From the lodge website (www.aaronlodge49.net):
What are the Masons? The oldest, largest and most charitable
men's fraternal organization in the world. Spiritual, not
religious in nature, requiring every member to profess a
belief in a Supreme Being of his choice. Family oriented with
many programs and groups to involve the entire family. An
opportunity for a man to improve himself. Rich in history,
tradition and patriotism. Sensitive to the needs of each
community where it exists. Open to men of good character
regardless of race, creed or religion.

5. What do TIHAN, the Tucson Toros, and
Tuesday All Have in Common?
It's TIHAN night at the Tucson Toros game on Tuesday, August
11, 2009!
And, what does that mean, you ask? Well, thanks to the
support of our generous sponsor, The Law Offices of Laura
Schoenfeld, TIHAN will receive half of the proceeds from the
ticket sales for the August 11 game. The game is the Tucson
Toros versus the Canadian team St. George.
But wait, it gets better… August 11 also happens to be
"Two for Tuesdays." This means that if you buy one
hotdog, soda, or chips you get one of the same items for free.
The absolutely pivotal purpose of this event is that the
ticket proceeds will help TIHAN to sustain its mission. So we
ask you to gather a group of family members and/or friends to
spend an August evening enjoying the great American summertime
pastime which also benefits one of your favorite charities! Just
in case you need other ideas for sharing game tickets here are
just a few:
- What about celebrating all your family/friends August
birthdays at the game?
- How about taking your favorite young people to the game?
- What about using the tickets for a work place raffle
relevant to your work?
- How about sponsoring individuals living with HIV/AIDS?
- How about taking the little league you coach to the game?
- Choosing a baseball book for your book club followed by
evening at the game.
- Taking your exercise group for a walk/run/stroll around
Reid Park followed by the game.
See, there are several ways you might be able to incorporate
this event into your work, social, fitness, and family time.
Hurry; do not delay in securing your tickets!

9. Volunteer Spotlight: Connor-Ryan
Huston
There are two types of people in this
world, those who volunteer and those who don't. Connor-Ryan
Huston, also known as C-R, is one of the many great volunteers
at TIHAN. Connor-Ryan volunteers not only in loving memory of
her husband but also because she simply wants to be part of
TIHAN. "I come here, and it's like coming home to my
family," she says.
C-R was born in St Louis, Missouri,
but raised in South Bend, Indiana. She married Bryan and had
eight wonderful children. She became involved with TIHAN
several years ago when her husband received assistance from a
CareTeam. Now she's been a volunteer for four years, either
answering phones as a receptionist or doing additional support
work for TIHAN. Currently, Connor-Ryan is in speakers training
to become a speaker about HIV/AIDS. Her goal is to get as many
people as possible well informed and educated about the faces
of the illness.
C-R likes to stay active, but when
there's spare time, it's definitely not wasted. You'll either
find her crocheting or gardening while listening to some
Broadway tunes. C-R enjoys most things, but there's just one
pet peeve that she can't stand: unexpectedly getting her feet
wet!
How could someone be so great? TIHAN
is very lucky to have a volunteer like Connor-Ryan, who is a
great asset to the office. Not only is she a hard-working
person, but the office can always use the extra help she
offers. So thank you, Connor-Ryan, for all that you do. We
take pleasure in you being a part of TIHAN.

10. Erase Stigma, End Violence
From a Kaiser Family Foundation press
release, April 2009:
"…HIV/AIDS in the U.S. may
carry less stigma than in the past. For instance, there has
been a slow and steady increase since the late 1990s in the
share of people who say they would be very comfortable with a
coworker who has HIV/AIDS. However… fully half of the public
says they would be uncomfortable having their food prepared by
someone who is HIV positive."
Misconceptions about HIV/AIDS can
lead to stigmatization and sometimes violence. Learn more at
our next Continuing Education workshop on Stigma and Violence
taught by Paolo Preston and another speaker TBD.
The workshop on Stigma and Violence
will be Thursday, August 6, 6-8 pm at TIHAN, 1011 N Craycroft
#301 (south of Speedway). Registration is appreciated but not
required. Call 299-6647 sign up! TIHAN continues to offer FREE Continuing
Education workshops to volunteers in collaboration with
the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF). We ask
all volunteers to attend at least three workshops each year to
stay up-to-date. All workshops are subject to change.

12. Bonkers about Tami Arthur
Tami Arthur is a wonderful and caring
person. Several members from her church, which are TIHAN
volunteers as well, encouraged her to volunteer. So Tami
pursued that wish… What Tami really wanted to do was to
visit those in the hospital or who were ill at home, give
rides to those who have no transportation, or just simply do
anything that would be helpful to someone who might be alone.
Tami feels that no one should be alone and it's important to
always know that someone cares. Now
Tami is Link Specialist volunteer, doing all that—and more!
She helps out in every way and is always involved in many
TIHAN events. Her husband and children also help out from time
to time as well!
Tami—thank you for your kind and
caring heart. We are BONKERS about you!

13. A Farewell
to Ari Kelly / Announcement about TIHAN's Director of
Education and Community Relations
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven.
—Ecclesiastes 3.1
With a heavy heart, I
have decided to leave my position as TIHAN's Director of
Education and Community Relations. I will begin working in
children’s ministry at my faith community in August. I have
appreciated the opportunity to be a TIHAN staff member for the
past two years and work with so many excellent volunteers. I
am humbled by the energy, time, and enthusiasm that TIHAN
volunteers, many of whom are living with HIV/AIDS themselves,
pour into TIHAN. Thank you for being supportive, encouraging,
and enlightening. I have learned things like “AIDS does not
discriminate” and “I am not my disease.” Thank you for
making it possible for TIHAN to be a source of compassion and
light in our community, a place for people to put their faith
into action. I look forward to being a TIHAN volunteer again.
God bless you and TIHAN.
—Ari
Kelly
TIHAN is grateful to Ari for her two
years of excellent service to our volunteers, faith
communities, and CarePartners. We are happy that she will
continue to be with us as a volunteer, sharing her faithful
commitment to AIDS education and support for those living with
this disease. Thank you, Ari! We are now accepting resumes for
a Director of Education and Community Relations (due to
funding issues, we have reduced this position to 25
hours/week). For
a job description and instructions for applying, click here.
