1. "Less Than Blue" Angels Fly in Formation

"We are all like one-winged angels. It is only when we help each other that we can fly." —Luciano de Crescenzo

The Old and New Testaments talk about "entertaining angels unawares." You just don't know who they are—whether they are heavenly angels, or whether you might live with one right here on earth! You will discover where they are when you participate in TIHAN Volunteer Orientation and Support Training. Future flights with them will be far beyond the expected!

Our next Support Training is Saturday, September 27, from 9:00am to 5:00pm at TIHAN, 1011 N. Craycroft Road, Suite 301. Forget 'where angels fear to tread' and fly in to help our CarePartners living with HIV/AIDS!

Support Training is now FREE and includes lunch, snacks, and your very own manual! Training will also be held on Saturday, November 22. Please RSVP by calling the TIHAN office at 299-6647. Questions? Contact Ari Kelly, ari@tihan.org or 299-6647.

2. Passing the Torch … Sharing the Spirit of Volunteerism

Get into the Spirit of the Olympics and Volunteer with TIHAN. Your first step to volunteering is signing up for a Volunteer Orientation. All you have to do is call the TIHAN office, 299-6647, and sign up for an upcoming Volunteer Orientation. We have orientations scheduled from 5:15-9:15pm on Thursday, September 11 and Thursday, November 13. To discuss the Orientations, or your Volunteer opportunities, email Kim Talerico, Volunteer Coordinator, kim@tihan.org

Living is the art of loving. Loving is the art of caring. Caring is the art of sharing. Sharing is the art of living. If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.
—Booker T. Washington

Helpful Tips All Volunteers Should Know

Ø Don't be afraid to try new things! This is the best way to learn, grow and develop new skills. (For parents, it's a way to be a terrific role model for your children.)

Ø Follow through on your commitments. If you find that your schedule has become extremely tight and you are too busy to continue volunteering, let your supervisor know. He or she may be disappointed, but they will understand. Good communication is vital for volunteering and it is much better to be clear.

Ø Give your volunteer supervisor some advance notice. It takes a lot of time and work to prepare for volunteers and figure out what projects will work out best for your time, talents, and interests. Make sure you give people adequate time in advance so they can best fill their needs.

Ø Have some ideas of projects you could do. If volunteer supervisors aren't sure how you could best help, suggest a couple of ideas you may be able to help with. (This advice is especially important with a volunteer coordinator who has never met you and doesn't know your talents or values). Check out our Volunteer Opportunity List at volunteersoaz.org for some volunteer possibilities you might enjoy.

Ø Be flexible. It's healthy to be willing to change some of the details of your volunteer projects—people and communities have real needs, and the needs can change based on outside circumstances.

Ø Follow up with the volunteer supervisors. They may be overwhelmed with projects and assignments, so don't take it personally if they don't get back to you immediately. Take the initiative and call or send a friendly email reminder in a week or so.

Ø Communicate! Don't be afraid to share your opinions, make comments or suggestions. You can always email your supervisor, or the Volunteer Coordinator, or make comments on your Volunteer Impact Report.

3. Wanted: Individuals Skilled with Microsoft Access 2003!

If you are skilled and experienced in Microsoft Access 2003 and are knowledgeable in Visual Basic, we desperately need your assistance. To better serve our CarePartners, donors, supporters and volunteers, we need to improve our database in the following areas:

  • Ability to write detailed reports
  • Design of additional pages on our database
  • Improve and/or redesign of database

If you are interested in the opportunity, call Leslie Johnson, Administrative Assistant, 299-6647, or email leslie@tihan.org to sign up.

CARE2 Database Developer/Administrator
To help us improve our
Access database

Overview of position:
Work with our Administrative assistant to improve our database so we may better serve our CarePartners, Donors, Supporters and Volunteers. Our database, called CARE2, is a multi-user, interactive relational database written in MS Access XP/2002/2003. It was created by a volunteer at another agency and given to us, and we have already modified it to enhance security features. We use the database for recording contact information, volunteer services, donor information, and CarePartner (client) records. This might give you a concept of the CARE2's complexity and program size:

  • Tables: Close to 100 (about 1/4th to 1/3rd are Linked Access)
  • Queries: A bit over 400 (of various types)
  • Forms: Over 100
  • Reports: Over 95
  • Pages: 3
  • Macros: About 20
  • Modules: 15

Specific Tasks:
1.
Writing Queries and Reports. Most of our needed queries and reports could be prepared with just a couple of hours of work; while others will take a little bit more time as they may require understanding the relationship of the various fields and tables within the database. This would require knowledge of MS Access 2003.

2. Programming "local" data fields and command buttons. This may take quite a bit of time and knowledge. The manual suggests for this task, "an Access developer with knowledge of programming in Visual Basic."

Time Required:
We would like to have these tasks completed within the next 60 days. We are estimating 20 hours to complete our identified needs.

Qualifications:
Skilled and experienced in Microsoft Access 2003 and knowledgeable in Visual Basic

Benefits to the Volunteer:
If you would like the satisfaction of doing a specialized task that enables others to work more efficiently, then this job is for you. You will improve your technical and computer skills through the process.

5. Check Your Knowledge about HIV: Test Question of the Month: What are the Four Fluids that Can Transmit HIV?

Often, people correctly answer three of the four body fluids that transmit HIV, but they answer incorrectly regarding the fourth fluid. Do you know the four body fluids?

The four body fluids that can transmit HIV are:

  • Blood
  • Semen
  • Vaginal secretions
  • Breast milk

Did you answer correctly all four fluids?

Sometimes, people mistakenly think that saliva, tears, vomit, or sweat can transmit HIV, but it's not true. HIV is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing blood (such as on needles or syringes) or blood products, and mother-to-child transmission (in utero, during childbirth, or through breast feeding).

Get the facts, and share them with others who might not have the information they need to stay protected and to keep their loved ones protected. And remember that you cannot get HIV through shaking hands or giving a hug!

7. Turnabout - A Benefit Show for TIHAN—Sunday, August 24

What is "Turnabout for TIHAN"? It's an annual show put on by some of Tucson's LGBT clubs and their bar staff. Their staff request donations from their friends and customers in order to do a "turn-about" from male to female (or vice versa) and put on a show for the community.

The theme for this year's "Turnabout for TIHAN" benefit show is "Stonewall Riot," and you can imagine the glitz, the passion, and fabulous splendor of it all! Tickets are on sale now, and volunteers are needed to help on the night of the event in a variety of roles.

Turnabout is one of the biggest drag shows of the year, and takes place on Sunday, August 24 at the Doubletree Hotel at 445 South Alvernon Way. The doors open at 4:30pm, and the show starts at 6:00pm. Tickets are only $15. Admission includes the show and finger food hors d'oeuvres at 4:30pm. The evening also features a raffle with some great prizes.

Join us for Turnabout, featuring emcees Lucinda Holliday ("Tucson's Queen of Comedy") and Barbra Seville ("Arizona's Entertainer Of The Year"), along with your favorite bar staff from Participating bars: Colors, Howl at the Moon, IBT's, Woody's, and Yard Dog Saloon.

Event sponsors include Wingspan (celebrating 20 years as Tucson's GLBT Community Center), Tucson's GLBT Chamber of Commerce, and the Tucson Shopper.

For more information about volunteering, contact Kim Talerico, Volunteer Coordinator, at kim@tihan.org or 299-6647. Tickets are on sale now through the TIHAN office (credit card orders can be taken by phone - 299-6647), or at participating bars.

[Be Advised: This show may feature adult themes, and is for mature audiences only!]

8. Dining with Friends: Parties with a Purpose!

Some of TIHAN's most generous and talented supporters are hosting dinner parties in their homes during the week of September 1 - 7. These "parties with a purpose" are happening throughout the week, and raise funds for TIHAN. If you haven't yet been invited to one, you might want to host your own party!

For more information about this exciting new benefit that brings together like-hearted people to break bread and enjoy great food and company while raising funds to support TIHAN, contact Scott Blades at 299-6647 or scott@tihan.org.

10. Be an InspirationVolunteer for TIHAN!

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people's lives, including your own. If you're feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by what's going on around you, volunteering to help someone in need can be a great way to cope. If you would like to support a cause, but cannot afford to donate money, you can donate your time instead. Helping others in need is such an important part of the American way of life.

When you attend a TIHAN Volunteer Orientation, you find what's right for you and how it fits your schedule; how volunteering can expand your mind and improve your skills—all while making you feel good about yourself and what you are doing, not to mention, making you a role model for others.

Call the TIHAN office, 299-6647, and sign up for a Volunteer Orientation on Thursday, September 11 or Thursday, November 13. To discuss the orientations or volunteer opportunities, email Kim Talerico, Volunteer Coordinator, kim@tihan.org.

11. TIHAN Volunteers Honored

On Thursday, July 31, Scott Blades, TIHAN's Executive Director, presented volunteer Beth Daum (pictured above) with an embroidered Faith in Action shirt and personal note from the national Executive Director of the Faith in Action program.

A shirt and note were also presented to AnnMarie, a TIHAN CarePartner and volunteer who was unable to be present at the July 31 event. These gifts were given by the national Faith in Action office in appreciation for Beth and AnnMarie's presentation at the National Faith in Action Conference held earlier this year in Phoenix.

Thanks and congratulations, Beth and AnnMarie, for making a difference and sharing your stories about the impact of TIHAN's faith in action program.

13. Put on Your Walking Shoes!

TIHAN is proud to be part of AIDSWALK once again! The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation's (SAAF) largest fundraiser will take place on the University of Arizona Mall on Sunday, October 19. You can make AIDSWALK 2008 a significant day in your life by walking, fundraising, and carrying decorative signs from your faith community, joining the sea of walkers, and attending TIHAN's Interfaith Service. This year's Interfaith Service will be combined with the AIDS Quilt Opening Ceremony and include beautiful music from Reveille and Desert Voices. Also new for 2008 is a celebration for "warriors living with HIV" to close the festivities.

The Quilt Opening Ceremony and Interfaith Service are combined at 7:15am. We will come together from different faiths to "remember, support, and prevent." This annual event has left a lasting impression on our community. Leaders of TIHAN member faith communities will speak during the service. Join us for a sacred time of acknowledgement and hope before the walk.

This is the perfect opportunity to gather a team from your faith community and get your youth group involved! You can also fundraise for TIHAN. We can provide instructions, an envelope, and a script to make it easy to be part of Team TIHAN. AIDSWALK is an exciting community event that draws nearly 6,000 participants. Use the momentum to increase HIV/AIDS awareness in your faith community. Ask your faith community liaison or leader to schedule a TIHAN AIDS Educator or Living With HIV speaker during your regular services, adult forum, or youth group.

Visit aidswalktucson.com to register and let Ari Kelly, TIHAN's Director of Education, know when your faith community has a team.

Contact Ari Kelly, ari@tihan.org or 299-6647, to plan your participation in AIDSWALK 2008.
