1. Meet TIHAN's Director of Education and Community Relations Ari Kelly

Have you seen this face? If not, what are you waiting for? Ari Kelly is TIHAN's new Director of Education and Community Relations.

Ari (rhymes with "Mary") was born in Tucson and has lived here most of her life. She comes from a large family that values education, hard work, and community service. She graduated from the U of A and volunteered at TIHAN for about a year before applying for the position. She is married to a youth minister, and in her spare time she enjoys playing soccer and babysitting.

She can't wait to meet every one of you and talk about how you can contribute to TIHAN's Education and Community Relations program.

As Director of Education and Community Relations, Ari will be responsible for coordinating HIV/AIDS awareness and education programs for faith communities, training and supporting TIHAN volunteers, working closely with congregations and their liaisons, coordinating agency publicity, and building upon TIHAN's relationships with other agencies, service providers, and the general community.

Ari is looking forward to helping coordinate the efforts of TIHAN's fantastic volunteers working for AIDS education and awareness. You can reach her at ari@tihan.org or 299-6647 ext. 14.

We meet the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 5:30 pm at TIHAN. If you are interested but can't attend meetings, you can still contribute! Contact Ari Kelly, Director of Education and Community Relations, ari@tihan.org or 299-6647 ext. 14.

5. Help keep the "Barbara Kaller-Cohen and Kenny Cohen Conference Room" looking like new

We enjoy having such a nicely-furnished space for meetings, training classes, and special projects. Can you help us keep our Conference Room looking nice by donating any of these items?

  • Table top protectors, such as clear Plexiglas that would let the beauty of the wood shine through, or table pads that could be used during projects or meetings. We have three tables, each 72" x 42".
  • Glides on the feet of the chairs to help move the chairs over the carpet with ease. We have a set of 16 chairs; each chair "foot" is a little larger than 1.25" x 1.25" and has a 3/8" diameter hole that is 1.5" deep.
  • Glides on the legs of the three tables. We frequently re-arrange the tables to suit the use of the Conference Room, and glides will protect the integrity of the tables as we move them into various positions.

For more details, contact Leslie Johnson, Administrative Assistant, at 299-6647 or leslie@tihan.org, or stop by the office to see the Conference Room for yourself.

7. Way to go, Dea!

Congratulations are in order for another of our wonderful TIHAN volunteers. Dea Brasgalla, who has been assisting in the TIHAN front office, was recently honored with a special recognition for her outstanding efforts in helping with the 'No On Proposition 107' campaign. During the annual Equality Arizona dinner in Phoenix, Dea (who has been dubbed "The Button Lady") was recognized and applauded by over 1,000.

Dea continues working to help and support others through her volunteerism for organizations including TIHAN, Wingspan, Equality Arizona, and other organizations. Thank you, Dea, for all you do for our community.

8. Help families affected by HIV/AIDS by contributing to the School Supply Drive

Many of the families in our community that are affected by HIV live on a fixed income and are only able to buy the most essential items. In response to that need last year Temple Emanu-El started a school supply drive for children living in families affected by HIV. The response was overwhelming. Their generous support provided backpacks and school supplies for many affected families in need.

This year other member congregations are joining to continue this important effort. Please help us by donating paper, pencils, binders, backpacks and other school supplies for school aged children. For more information contact Juanita at 520-299-6647.

9. Can YOU answer this Summer SOS?

Once Chekhov said, "People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they are happy." This is quite a daunting task during a Tucson summer. CarePartners need increased support during this season. Many appreciate donations of Gatorade, bottled water and sunscreen while others need transportation to medical appointments and increased help with physical tasks. Feeling loved and supported by the community makes people happy.

Please help us to make summer less noticeable in the Old Pueblo. Contact Juanita at 520-299-6647 for more information on ways to help.

10. Get your tickets now for Turnabout for TIHAN - Sunday, September 2

What is "Turnabout for TIHAN"? Turnabout is an annual show put on by some of Tucson's LGBT clubs and their bar staff. The staff request donations from their friends and customers in order to do a "turn-about" from male to female (or vice versa) and put on a show for the community.

So, if you'd like to see your favorite bartender in "drag" and performing a number for charity, sponsor them and come see the show! Always one of the wildest nights of the year, this year's Turnabout theme is "Puttin' On the Ritz," and it promises to be a fantabulous evening of glitz and glamour. If you'd like, you can even sponsor your favorite bar staff online (Donate to TIHAN Now On a Secured Website).

It's one of the biggest drag shows of the year, and takes place on Sunday, September 2 (during Labor Day weekend) at the Doubletree Hotel at 445 South Alvernon Way. The doors open at 5:30pm, and the show starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are only $15.00. Admission includes the show and finger food hors d'oeuvres at 5:30pm. The evening also features a raffle with some great prizes.

Tickets are on sale now through the TIHAN office (credit card orders can be taken), or at participating bars:

  • Ain't Nobody's Bizness
  • Colors
  • Howl at the Moon
  • IBT's
  • Woody's
  • Yard Dog Saloon

The performer who raises the most money in sponsorships wins a $100 gift certificate for dinner at the restaurant of their choice, so sponsor your favorite bartender now! If you'd like, you can even sponsor your favorite bar staff online (Donate to TIHAN Now On a Secured Website).

11. Volunteer Opportunities Abound

Are you interested in any of these specific ways to help TIHAN fulfill its mission?

  • PowerPoint Designer
  • Speaker/Presenter
  • Receptionist
  • Link Specialist or CareTeam member
  • Grants Team member

Power Point Designers

We need a talented Volunteer to design PowerPoint presentations for various educational presentations (HIV 101, Speakers' Training, and CarePartner Support Training). We will provide you with the material to design the presentations. Our program manuals are intensive and you will need to have the time to read the manuals thoroughly in order to design a presentation. You will need to have access to Microsoft PowerPoint, with capability to save your work to CD and deliver or mail the CD to TIHAN. For more information, call or email Ari Kelly, TIHAN's Director of Education, 299-6647, or email ari@tihan.org.

Speakers/Presenters

If you are a retired or current teacher or if you have public speaking experience we have a Volunteer opportunity for you. We need volunteers to deliver HIV 101 presentations and/or be part of a Living with HIV/AIDS panel during our various training programs. You must first complete our Volunteer Orientation and Speakers' Training. Our next Orientation is on Thursday, October 11th and the next Speakers' Training is November 17th. You need to be reliable and comfortable with many different kinds of people. For more information, call or email Ari Kelly, TIHAN's Director of Education, 299-6647, or email ari@tihan.org.

Receptionists

Be the voice of TIHAN: Do you have the gift of hospitality, along with some office skills such as telephone usage and typing on computers? Do you want to spend your time in a more meaningful way? Then sign up to become a TIHAN Receptionist Volunteer. Shifts are four hours long, preferably one or two mornings or afternoons a week. Attendance at our Volunteer Orientation training as well as our Receptionist Training is required. For more information, call or email Leslie Johnson, TIHAN's Administrative Assistant, 299-6647, or email leslie@tihan.org.

Link Specialist and CareTeam Member Volunteers

Link Specialist and CareTeam Member Volunteers work directly with our CarePartners. Link Specialists provide short-term compassionate care to CarePartners and their support network while CareTeam Members work closely with CarePartners making regular visits and phone calls, going to the movies, helping with errands like grocery shopping, doctor's visits, etc. Attendance at our Volunteer Orientation training as well as our Support Training class is required before volunteering. For more information call TIHAN at 299-6647, or email Juanita Molina, Director Care Partner Support at juanita@tihan.org.

Grants Team Members

As a Grants Team Member Volunteer, you would assist the agency in creating a plan to solicit grants from foundations and groups and write grant proposals accordingly. Attendance at our Volunteer Orientation training is required prior to volunteering. For more information, please contact Kim Talerico, 299-6647, or email kim@tihan.org.
