1. Event
Focuses on Gathering Tucson's Hispanic/Latino Community to Focus
on HIV/AIDS Prevention
National
Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) will be commemorated in
Tucson on Thursday, October 15, 2009 in an event in the
Proscenium Theater of the Pima Community College, West Campus
(2202 West Anklam Road, just west of St. Mary's Hospital). The
event starts at 4:30pm with resource/information tables, and
the program takes place from 6:30-8:00pm.
Part of a national
effort, NLAAD was established in response to the devastating
impact HIV/AIDS has had on Hispanic/Latino communities across
the country. Taking place during Hispanic
heritage month, its purpose is to draw attention to the
critical role that HIV testing and prevention education plays
in stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS among Hispanics/Latinos.
NLAAD is FREE and open to all.

Sharing the Holiday Spirit with Our CarePartners and their
Kids
The
Holiday Season?! Can you believe it's right around the
corner? It's time again for TIHAN to partner with Southern
Arizona AIDS Foundation to provide holiday programs for those
living with HIV/AIDS. The planning stages have begun, and
we're looking for volunteers to help us plan and staff this
year's holiday events. (Note: To work with our CarePartners
living with HIV, we do require volunteers to have attended our
Volunteer
Orientation and our Care
& Support Training.)
Each
season, TIHAN and SAAF join forces to provide holiday programs
that are incredibly important during this potentially
difficult season for our CarePartners. The first event is
geared for our CarePartners with children, where CarePartners
and their kids select from among donated gifts, wrap the gifts
for each other, and enjoy holiday arts and crafts. For this
event, we need volunteers in a variety of capacities, from
event planning to helping on the day of the event. We also
need donations of holiday arts and craft items.
Our
second holiday event is a special holiday dinner/dance for our
CarePartners. This fantastic event is themed, decorated, and
is always a blast. We need people to help coordinate this
event, and people to help staff it as well. If you are
interested in helping with either of these two December
events, please contact Erin at 299-6647 or erin@tihan.org.

3. GLBT Pride
Multi-Faith Worship Service – October 8!
One
of the many misconceptions about HIV is that it is a gay
disease. And one of the many misconceptions about gay people
is that they aren't people of faith. Wingspan presents a GLBT
Pride Worship Service on Thursday, October 8 at 7:00pm.
Leaders from Jewish, Sufi, Sikh, Christian, and other
traditions will lead the service as Tucsonans gather to
celebrate the gifts of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender community. Several community choirs will perform
as part of the worship service.
The
event will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of
Tucson (4831 East 22nd Street) at 7:00pm, with a reception to
be held following the service. For more information, contact
Marc Paley at lgbtinfo@jfsa.org.

Volunteer Spotlight: Dean R. Taylor
Dean
R. Taylor is the very definition of Mr. Volunteer. Dean
volunteers as TIHAN's Finance Director. Prior to his present
position at TIHAN, Dean served as the Treasurer on the Board
of Directors from 2000-2007.
Dean
also volunteers with TIHAN's Poz Cafe program, helps with
Turnabout and many other TIHAN events, and serves on the
Finance Committee. In addition, he volunteers his time with
SAAF, where he delivers food to clients as part of the Food
for Life program. He also helps with registration at AIDSWalk,
and does much, much more. His Tucson volunteer efforts began
in 1993 with the Shanti Foundation. Dean is a parishioner and
acolyte at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, located in the
historic district of Armory Park.
Dean
is also a major donor to TIHAN, and has been selected to
receive a special "Spirit of Philanthropy" award at
the 21st
Annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon at the Westin La
Paloma Resort and Spa on November 10.
Born
in Durango, Colorado, Dean has a degree in Business from the
University of Washington. He and Jim, his partner of 27 years,
lived and worked in Seattle, then in Southern California for a
number of years. They came to Tucson in 1991. Jim lost his
battle with cancer in 1992.
Dean
enjoys the company of his Schnauzer "Weetwo" and
fills his life with volunteering. He believes that by serving
others he keeps his own life vibrant, his brain active, and he
always has new adventures. Not a bad way to live in your 70's!

Checking What You Know about HIV/AIDS: Test Question of the
Month
True
or False: Oral and dental health are vital to the overall
wellbeing of people living with HIV?
It's
true… Oral/dental health is vital to the overall health and
wellbeing of people living with HIV/AIDS. In fact, while
maintaining good oral/dental health is an important aspect of
everyone's life, it may be even more important for people
living HIV.
According
to the Health Resources and Services Administration of the US
Department of Health and Human Services, "The vast
majority of dental care that an HIV infected person requires
is no different than what an uninfected person would typically
need. However, good dental care for [people living with HIV]
is not a routine matter because oral health is a crucial
component of overall health care for an infected person. The
potential outcomes of getting such care, or not receiving it,
are notable."
For
more information on HIV and oral health, visit these resource
sites:
"Most
oral health problems can be found in people who are either HIV
positive or negative. Yet there are some important
differences. A few conditions are seen almost exclusively in
people with HIV, while some that are found in both populations
are more problematic for people with HIV, especially those
with advanced disease. A diminished immune system can alter
the course of oral disease and require more aggressive
treatment to prevent minor troubles from escalating into major
health problems…"

the HIV positive patient, regular dental care is not only to
maintain the health of your teeth but also your entire
body..."

Avoiding Conflicts of Interest: TIHAN’s Policy and
Expectations
As a nonprofit organization
that values honesty, TIHAN's Board of Directors recently adopted
a policy statement affirming our standard of behavior at TIHAN
is that all staff, volunteers, and board members avoid conflicts
of interest between the interests of the TIHAN on one hand, and
personal, professional, and business interests on the other
hand. We want to protect the integrity of TIHAN's
decision-making process, to enable our constituencies to have
confidence in our integrity, and to protect the integrity and
reputations of volunteers, staff and board members. We ask all
staff and board members, as well as key volunteers, to make a
full, written disclosure of interests, relationships, and
holdings that could potentially result in a conflict of
interest, and to remove themselves from the decision-making
process for any matter for which there is a potential conflict
of interest.

David with Bonkers
1 3.
We're Bonkers about David Zinke
For more than a decade,
David Zinke has been sharing his skills in support of TIHAN and
those we serve. Having been clean and sober "one day at a
time" throughout his association with TIHAN, David—also
known as "Zink"—is a handyman, candy man (ask about
his wonderful Zink's Treats fudge!), actor/director, and more.
He is the set designer and stage manager for the annual
Turnabout for TIHAN benefit show, helping raise tens of
thousands of dollars for TIHAN's support services and AIDS
awareness programs.
David—thank you for your contributions to
TIHAN! We are BONKERS about you!
