10. "A
Call to Action" Community Forum on HIV and African
Americans
African-Americans are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Half
of all new HIV infections in the United States today are among
African-Americans. Although African-Americans represent
only 12% of the U.S. population, they account for 50% of AIDS
cases. Locally, African Americans constitute 10% of AIDS cases
(1996-2000) and 9% of HIV cases (1987-2001) according to the
Pima County Health Department.
In order to address this crisis, "A Call To
Action" Community Forum on HIV/AIDS in the African
American community will be held on Thursday, November
15 from 5:00-8:00pm at the Northwest Neighborhood Center, 2160
N. 6th Avenue.
The purpose of this event is to address the lack of
culturally-specific education and outreach, testing and
support services in the Tucson area and to encourage not only
dialogue, but also targeted and focused programs to begin to
change the outcomes of this crisis. Elected officials,
appointed leaders, governmental agencies and educators will
participate in workshops to develop realistic and attainable
goals and objectives regarding this issue. Members of Tucson
African American neighborhoods and community groups are also
encouraged to take part in this event.
TIHAN is pleased to be part of this Tucson African
American HIV/AIDS Task Force that includes representatives
from the Coalition for African American Heath &
Wellness, Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, COPE
Community Services, El Rio Community Health Center, El Rio
Special Immunology Associates, Pima County Health Dept. Teresa
Lee Clinic, Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, and the Tucson
Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network.

Start Talking—Stop Transmission
This year, many TIHAN member faith communities have
expressed their commitment to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by
talking about it during their worship services. In order to
serve Tucsonans living with HIV and prevent new infections, we
must raise awareness. Ask your faith community leaders to
talk about HIV. World
AIDS Day on December 1 is the perfect opportunity for this
discussion! If your faith community leaders would like
assistance, direct them to your TIHAN liaison or Ari Kelly,
Director of Education, 299-6647 or ari@tihan.org.
If you have the passion, find ways to support your faith
community's liaison to TIHAN!

Donating Your Bookman's Trade Credits to Help our CarePartners
We are collecting Bookman's trade credits so that we can
redistribute them in convenient denominations to CarePartners.
Bookman's Entertainment Exchange will buy your entertainment
items and offer you trade credits that can be spent like cash
in Bookman's stores. Trade credits never expire and can be
used at all three Bookman's locations in Tucson.
If you have Bookman's trade credits, bring them to TIHAN.
We will take them to Bookman's so they can consolidate them
and issue multiple credit slips that we can provide to
CarePartners. Search your bookcases and closets at home.
Perhaps you can find books, magazines, puzzles, CDs, etc. that
you can take to Bookman's. Begin gathering credit slips now,
and bring them to the TIHAN office!.

TIHAN Volunteer Opportunities
Receptionist
Do you have the right stuff? We are looking for people who
project hospitality and professionalism to work 4-hour shifts
at our Reception Desk. As a Receptionist, you represent
our agency to visitors and phone callers. Our Receptionists
work in 4-hours shifts, Mondays through Fridays, to direct
callers and visitors to the appropriate staff person, maintain
the physical appearance of the office, create a pleasing
attitude and atmosphere, and help our Administrative Assistant
with phone calls, paperwork, and special projects. Computer
expertise is a plus in this volunteer position. If you have
the gifts of hospitality, professionalism, and paper
organization, this may the position for you! Please contact
Leslie Johnson, Administrative Assistant at 299-6647, or leslie@tihan.org.
Constant Contact
Like to work from your computer at home? You might be the person for us. We are looking for two
volunteers to alternate monthly in the position of preparing
our e-newsletter each month. You would be using our
on-line service and working with a template to upload articles
and create links within those articles for artwork, photos,
and other websites. The work is done in coordination with our
Website Editor, Administrative Assistant, and Executive
Director. Learn how to create beautiful and successful
e-newsletters communicating news, events, and opportunities!
You would need Microsoft Word 2003, E-mail, and Internet
access. Each month's work would take a total of 3 or 4 hours
concentrated within a 1 or 2 day period, sometime between the
5th and the 15th of the month, according to TIHAN's mailing
schedule. A team of two people will ensure that the timing
will work with at least one of you each month. If you think
you are one of those persons, please contact Leslie Johnson,
Administrative Assistant, at 299-6647, or email her, leslie@tihan.org.
Speakers/Presenters
If you are a teacher (current or retired) or if you have
public speaking experience, we have a volunteer opportunity
for you. We need volunteers to do HIV 101 presentations and/or
be part of a "Living with HIV/AIDS" panel during our
various trainings. You must first complete our Volunteer
Orientation and our Speakers' Training. Our next Orientation
is on Thursday, November 8 and the next Speakers' Training is
Saturday, November 17. You need to be reliable and comfortable
with many different kinds of people. For more information,
call or email Ari Kelly, TIHAN's Director of Education,
299-6647, or email ari@tihan.org.
Links Specialist and CareTeam Volunteers
We have several people on a waiting list that need your
help! Links Specialist and CareTeam Volunteers work
directly with our CarePartners living with HIV/AIDS. Link
Specialists help get our CarePartners registered and connected
to support services such as financial assistance, check-in
calls, and visits when they are in the hospital. Care Team
volunteers are assigned to a specific HIV+ CarePartner and
take turns making regular visits and phone calls, going to the
movies, helping with errands like grocery shopping, doctor's
visits, etc. Attendance at our Volunteer Orientation training
as well as our Support Training class is required before
working directly with CarePartners. For more information call
TIHAN at 299-6647, or email Scott Blades, Executive Director
at scott@tihan.org.
Do you like to talk on the Phone?
We always need help making calls to our Volunteers,
Speakers/Presenters, Clergy; following up with people who have
signed up for Trainings; and people on TIHAN's contact list.
For example, when we have an upcoming Clergy Roundtable, we
need to find out who will attend. We first send out postcards,
so these are follow-up reminder calls to see who is planning
to attend. You can make the calls from home or from TIHAN. It
is best to call Tuesday - Thursday during the day, but if you
have other times you are available, we would appreciate your
help. One hour each week (or less) is all it takes. If you are
interested contact Ari Kelly, Director of Education, at
299-6647, or email her at ari@tihan.org.

BONKERS about Kris Marsh
Kris Marsh is one of TIHAN's dedicated volunteers. She
serves on TIHAN's Board of Directors, (is a former Board
President, in fact) and is an active member of the Development
Committee that assists with fundraising for TIHAN's programs.
She and her husband are also among our most significant
donors, and she helped involve her company Keegan
Linscott & Kenon, P.C., a certified public accounting
firm, as the presenting sponsor for our Treasures for TIHAN
auction this year. Even her parents, Bill and Eunice, and her
children Adam and Katherine, have helped TIHAN! Kris is always
here when we need her with a smile on her face and a warm
welcome for everyone. With her caring heart and her strong
advocacy, Kris Marsh is a leader, and TIHAN and those we serve
are thankful. Kris, we are very grateful for your presence and
contributions—we are BONKERS about you!
