1. Reminder: Your donation to TIHAN will be DOUBLED if received by December 31, 2009

You may have heard our very exciting announcement: if you make a contribution to TIHAN before the end of December, your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling the impact of your gift!

Please take a moment now and write a check (or click here to make a gift through our secure online donation site) to offer your gift in support of those living with HIV/AIDS, and the amount of your gift will be matched and DOUBLED. How is this miracle happening that your gift is matched? It is because a special group of TIHAN donors, volunteers, and staff are putting forth extra funds because they believe so strongly in the mission and programs of TIHAN, and want to encourage you to give as generously as you can!

Note: If you would like to check how much you have contributed to TIHAN this year, please contact Scott Blades, Executive Director, at 299-6647 or scott@tihan.org for an update on your contribution history.

We will also be collecting holiday gifts ($10-$25 range) to be distributed to our clients at our holiday party Poz Cafe, as well as items for our care packages (see below). For more information or to RSVP, contact Katelyn McDonald, Volunteer Resources Coordinator, at (520) 299-6647 or at katelyn@tihan.org. We hope to see you there!

3. Urgently Needed – Toiletry Items Needed for Care Packages!

As the economy continues to impact those we serve, TIHAN's care packages continue to be of great importance. It can be difficult to fit some critical items into an already-stretched budget—things like toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, razors, and lotion. With your generous donations of these items (which our CarePartners cannot purchase with food stamps), we are able to create care packages to give to our CarePartners to help them through the month. Please drop off your donated toiletry items at the TIHAN office. We especially need items before our next Poz Cafe (Thursday, December 17), as our pantry is currently empty. Thanks for all of your support!

5. Annual Volunteer Satisfaction Survey

If you haven't already, please take a few minutes to complete our Annual Volunteer Satisfaction Survey. Your input will help us assess our strengths and determine the areas where improvement is needed. Also the survey is completely anonymous so please be as thorough as possible and do not put your name on the survey. 6. Volunteer Spotlight: Don Wenig

Don Wenig, an Iowa native, grew up in Dallas and moved to Tucson after a stint in the Army during the Korean War. He attended the University of Texas, but finished his education at the U of A. After a couple of years with an advertising agency in Dallas, he returned to Tucson where he worked with the Red Cross blood program before managing the ski area on Mt. Lemmon early in the 1960's. Don says he thinks he was trying to figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up, but knew he wanted to live in Arizona.

He eventually settled on teaching elementary school in Tucson. By 1982, he and his wife, Doris, decided to retire to Patagonia where they remodeled an old adobe and ran a B&B for 10 years. He was active in the community and served on the community clinic board, the endowment committee for the Public Library, the Senior Citizens board and helped to establish a butterfly garden in the town park. At the advice of a friend, Don began volunteering in the office at TIHAN and now drives from Green Valley each week to work as a Data Entry Team member—cleaning up the mailing lists, entering donation information, adding people onto the mailing list, and otherwise being an asset to the office, enjoying the amazing and wonderful staff and volunteers of TIHAN.

We are all better for your work here—thanks, Don!

9. Wish List

Little things make a big difference here at TIHAN. This holiday season, why not add us to your list (don't forget to check it twice) and give us the gift of some much-needed office and cooking supplies? Here's what we're hoping to find in our stockings:

  • a Cuisinart food processer

  • warm coats and blankets for our CarePartners during these cold nights

  • large Post-it style easel pads

  • 1-inch, white, 3-ring binders

  • 44¢ stamps

  • greeting cards, especially thank you cards and sympathy cards

10. TNT – Make Friends, Have Fun, Make a Difference!

Come join us every Tuesday evening from 5:30pm to 8:00pm for TIHAN's weekly drop-in volunteer night. Tuesday Nights at TIHAN is a great opportunity to come out and meet new people, or better acquaint yourself with the ones you already know!

Unlike many of our other volunteer opportunities, no training is required for individuals who want to volunteer at TNT. Feel free to bring friends and family who want to help out! If you are interested in attending TNT, please contact Katelyn at (520) 299-6647 or at katelyn@tihan.org.

11. Database Maintenance Guru Needed

TIHAN is loosing one of our key volunteers this month. Ian Biehler is graduating from the U of A and moving on to life out in the real world, so we have some awfully big shoes to fill.

The database maintenance volunteer should be familiar with Microsoft Access. This volunteer will be responsible for designing queries, modifying tables, and performing some data entry. The volunteer will need to complete our volunteer orientation and must follow client confidentiality procedures. Schedule is flexible, depending on the volunteer's availability. If you're fluent in Microsoft Access and would like to volunteer your time and talents to TIHAN, please contact Katelyn McDonald, our Volunteer Coordinator, at katelyn@tihan.org and let her know your availability.

12. We're Bonkers about Jenny Hartung

Jenny Hartung is a dedicated and generous TIHAN volunteer who is involved in our monthly Poz Cafe lunch program. Jenny has extensive volunteer experience and through her church, started as a congregational volunteer at Poz Cafe. She found working at Poz Cafe to be a very rewarding experience and went through TIHAN's orientation and training so she could get more involved. Jenny is also active as part of the TIHAN newsletter mailing team. She is a talented gift wrapper who especially enjoys wrapping presents for the children at this month's TIHAN/SAAF holiday party for people living with HIV and their kids. Jenny, thank you for your talents and generous contributions—we are BONKERS about you!
