Holiday Gift and Giving Ideas!

December 2008

If you want to give a holiday gift in support of TIHAN and those we serve, here are a few suggestions for meaningful gifts:

1.  Make a financial gift to TIHAN in honor of someone special to you.  Does Dad really need another tie?  Does cousin Pat need a tin of popcorn?  Consider giving the gift of life in the name of your loved one. TIHAN will be happy to send an acknowledgement informing of them of the gift made in their name.

2.  Buy some holiday gifts to be distributed to our CarePartners living with HIV at our Poz Cafe luncheon (popular holiday gift items include blankets--especially electric blankets, jackets, sweaters, small space heaters, small microwave ovens, coffee makers, crock pots, $20 gift certificates to grocery stores or discount stores).

3.  Shop at and support businesses that support the work of TIHAN, especially locally-owned companies.  If you are looking for books, restaurants, clothing, jewelry or other gift items, make sure you give your money to those that give back to our community.

4.  Purchase a gift certificate for a turkey dinner for one of our CarePartners.  Grocery stores sell pre-cooked heat-and-serve complete turkey dinners that make it easy for someone to enjoy a holiday meal, and even invite a few friends or enjoy leftovers for a few days.

5.  Make a financial contribution to TIHAN in memory of someone special to you.  It's a wonderful way to remember people who have made a difference in your life, and through supporting the work of TIHAN, you can make a real difference in their name.  If you wish, TIHAN will be happy to send an acknowledgement informing of the memorial gift.

6.  Many restaurants are offering bonuses when you purchase gift certificates.  For example, you can buy $100 worth of gift certificates, and some establishments will give you an additional $30 gift certificate for free!  Give two loved ones a $50 gift certificate, then donate the $30 gift certificate to Treasures for TIHAN (and get a tax deduction for it!)  For a list of restaurants offering these specials, see the December 4th Arizona Daily Star article with a list (http://www.azstarnet.com/altsn/food_inside/food/269841) or visit the Tucson Originals website (http://www.tucsonoriginals.com/)

7.  Tell your friends and family that, instead of stressing over what gift item to buy for you, you'd prefer that they make a gift to TIHAN in your name to support the care and education that we provide.  TIHAN and our CarePartners will benefit, your friends get the tax deduction, and you get the warm glow knowing you have made a difference in someone's life.

8.  Make a contribution of items that TIHAN needs.  Inkind (non-cash) items needed include office supplies, toiletry items for care packages for people living with HIV/AIDS, and art/gift certificate items for us to auction off at our upcoming Treasures for TIHAN benefit auction.

9.  The IRS has extended the deadline for the IRA Charitable Rollover, allowing individuals age 70½ and older to make distributions from the IRAs to their favorite charities, free from income tax.  Check with your tax advisor to see if this may be a beneficial option for you.

Americans Rate Charity Gifts a Priority This Holiday Season

Amid widespread concerns about the economy, Americans are planning to cut their holiday spending but not their charitable giving, according to a new study. In fact, some Americans may actually increase their year-end giving, as they make donations on behalf of friends and family members in lieu of purchasing presents.

Seventy-one percent of Americans are trimming back on their holiday spending, according to a study conducted for World Vision by the polling company Harris Interactive.

But nearly half (49 percent) said they are more likely to give a "charitable gift," such as a child sponsorship, a tent, or a cow to help someone in need as a holiday present.

Eight-four percent of people in the study said they would prefer to receive a gift that would benefit someone else rather than a traditional present, such as clothing or electronics.

The study showed that Americans enjoy giving and receiving presents, but do not necessarily need or care deeply about the gifts they receive.
